Are you tired? Entertaining your children all day and they STILL seem out of control? What would you say if I told you there was a way to let that go, that you could do less, be quiet, relax and find connection and mindfulness WITH your kids.
Today’s guest is Peter Moses, co founder of The Mindful Experience for Children. He has taught all levels as a school teacher and currently leads workshops for parents and early childhood professionals. A musician and Father of 6 kids from 39 years old to 2!!! As you can see he brings a lot of perspectives to the table. You can learn more about Peter on themindfulexperience.com
Here is his secret, children are already masters of mindfulness, by being in the present moment! I love how Peter challenges the idea that kids are wild, and can’t sit still….. they CAN! They are capable! Anna Seewald speaks into how our language and self awareness can powerfully impact our kids. The great opportunity we ALL have is to teach our children this level of emotional intelligence.
Can you carve out time to relax? Just notice your thoughts. Are they getting louder or quieting during this silence? You don’t have to believe everything you hear. And you don’t have to believe everything you THINK. Sometimes that voice in your head isn’t helping at all, it wants to serve us but it can often hurt us.
Peter brings to light when that voice is getting louder and bolder, that’s NOT you, that’s your mind looking to the future to solve problems. The ego is uncomfortable….. Those quiet moments with your mind, that’s YOU.
This episode is full of tools to use to nurture your child’s natural ability to tap into their mindfulness. He shares a wonderful exercise using a beanbag on your belly during breath. How to see a thought, not entertain it, and steadily let it go to balance the mind.
The deepest connect you can make for your child is through MODELING. Can you show your child how to go with the flow during times of transition, times things aren’t going as planned?
Peter gives lots of ideas to incorporate to your daily routine:
-Sharing gratitude in moments of the day over dinner
-Pausing during times of upset to take a deep breath, pulling yourself out of fight, flight or freeze
-Acknowledging each child’s different mindset. How praise, and honest approval from those loved ones can generate more of the behaviors you want to see
-Cementing in your child that they are GOOD, capable and able to do this
-Teaching children, even young children, that feelings will pass
-Showing our children that we are capable to hold space for their emotions
-Modeling when we lose our cool, or make a mistake, apologizing and sharing ways we could try to make that better in the future
This episode also shares breathing techniques for ALL ages, that can bring attention to the body and away from negative thinking…. Do you want to hear MORE? (I know I do) Listen in to hear tons of games, positive routines, and affirmations to use!!
