While experiencing a trauma doesn’t guarantee that a person will develop an addiction, research clearly suggests that trauma is a major underlying source of addiction behavior.
People who are passionate about their work and message most often are driven by the power of their personal story.
In this week’s episode of the Authentic Parenting podcast I interviewed a woman named Ann Schiebert. I honestly didn’t know much about her. I knew she has spent twenty-five years working with teens, young adults and families in the areas of chemical dependency, codependency, dual diagnosis and trauma.
But as turned out she had lost her own son to overdose.
She has kept her story hidden from everyone for years. She felt a tremendous guilt for not being able to do something to save her son.
Dr. Schiebert also shares what she knows about trauma and addiction today that she didn’t know before and why it is important to educate parents about trauma.
Other things we talked about:
- how to discover your own core family values and why that’s important
- how to have age appropriate values conversations with your children
- how to instill your values in your children
- what are some teen trends that every parent needs to know
- what preemptive parenting is
- and more
