In this episode host, parent educator Anna Seewald and guest, award-winning parenting author, speaker and the mother of four children Ann Douglas talk about raising a child with a psychological condition. How to Handle the Highs, the Lows, and Everything in Between.
Ann Douglas knows firsthand just how daunting it can be—and what a difference knowledge and support can make. Each of her four children (now grown and thriving) has dealt with one or more mental health challenges, and Douglas shares what she has learned about coping with the emotional roller coaster, finding the best treatments, helping kids manage their symptoms and succeed academically, and keeping the family strong.
Parenting Through the Storm is a guide to parenting a child who is struggling with a mental health, neurodevelopment, or behavioral challenge.
About Ann Douglas in her own words:
I am the author of a number of bestselling books about pregnancy and parenting (including The Mother of All Pregnancy Books and The Mother of All Baby Books) and a magazine writer and content creator who specializes in writing about parenting and health. My most recent book is Parenting Through the Storm: Handling the Highs, the Lows, and Everything In-Between, a guide to parenting a child who is struggling with a mental, neurodevelopment, or behavioral challenge. I am frequently invited to speak at health, education, and parenting conferences about the issues raised in my books and at conferences for writers.
I live and work in Peterborough, Ontario, where I volunteer my time with a variety of projects and causes. I am currently serving on the national editorial board for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s Portico website and the social media team for The Canadian Red Cross. And I recently collaborated with Partners for Mental Health on this child and youth mental health advocacy letter and this series of mental health videos for parents.
In June 2013, I became the second person ever to be awarded a Lifetime Membership by the Professional Writers Association of Canada (in recognition of my contributions to the freelance writing profession).
